Winter, sorted: three boots for wet weeks

Winter is the season that finds out which shoes were built for it. Wet pavements, muddy paths, cold mornings that turn into rain by lunchtime: one pair rarely covers all of it. So we picked three boots from the range, one for each kind of week, and put them on one page.

For fields and puddles: the Fen Wellington. Fully waterproof, with a lining that keeps the cold out and a sole that grips on wet grass. It is the boot for dog walks, allotments and the school run on the worst days of the year. Wear it with a thick sock, and size up if you are between two sizes.

For long walks: the Tor Walking Boot. A stiffer sole and a higher shaft that holds the ankle on uneven ground. It takes a few walks to soften, and after that it is the pair you reach for whenever the plan is more than an hour outside.

For town: the Harbour Chelsea. Light, easy to pull on, and smart enough for the office. The leather takes a little rain without complaint, and a coat of wax twice a season keeps it that way.

Not sure about the fit? The size guide explains how to measure, and the care guide covers the rest: drying wet boots away from the heater, brushing off mud before it sets, and treating leather before the season starts rather than after it. A boot looked after in October is still a good boot in March.
